In Great Britain, the predicted increase in temperature in the next 50 years is approximately 4 degrees centigrade and this is largely attributed to global warming. The potential environmental and socio-economic consequences of greenhouse gas emissions pose a vivid reminder of the urgency to persuade people to become committed to lowering their “carbon footprint” (amount of CO2 they produce). CEM has developed a unique system to promote green practices and encourage energy conservation at their properties under management. The scheme is called Green Vision and it is part of a comprehensive range of carbon footprint assessments executed at property level and aimed to improve efficiency and make homes greener. Non-CEM customers are also invited to sign up to our Green Vision assessment. Qualified Facilities Managers will inspect the buildings and individually rate them on a scale of 1-10. A property receiving an EcoRating of 10 has the most damaging environmental impact, while 1 is the optimum and desired level. All aspects of the building will be investigated, e.g. waste recycling, heating, cooling, ventilation, energy management, rain water retention and purchasing electricity through green tariffs. Possible improvements to minimise the property’s carbon footprint will be proposed at the end of the exercise, e.g. improving bicycle storage, well maintained foot paths, renewable energy and installation of recycling bins. Installing energy efficient lighting in all buildings under our management is one of the areas that Green Vision will cover. A study found that if every household in Great Britain replaced just one 60W light bulb with a CC Vivid LED bulb (energy efficient bulb), a incredible saving of 24,184,400,000 Watts per day would be achieved! As a further measure of our commitment to helping the environment, CEM is a member of the UK Green Building Council, a not for profit membership based organisation aiming to achieve a step change in the sustainability of the UK built environment.
